The genome of the burmese Python

We have produced a working draft of the genome of the Burmese Python (Python molurus bivattatus), based on 20x coverage from primarily Illumina paired-end long read sequence data

Burmese python genome v1.0 Draft Available now
The first draft assembly of the Burmese python genome is currently available from NCBI.

This Whole Genome Shotgun project has been deposited at DDBJ/EMBL/GenBank under the accession AEQU000000000. This first draft assembly described here is AEQU010000000.

Goals for draft v2, coming soon
We are currently adding greater coverage from various length long mate-pair paired-end reads to contribute greater structural coverage, and thus increase the python genome assembly. We are also adding a major cDNA sequencing component to the project to greatly increase the annotation of genes.

Burmese python bac library - commercially available
Amplicon Express has contributed a comprehensive BAC library (at 5x coverage) that is commercially available for gene mapping or other purposes. This BAC library was created from the exact same individual python for which the genome was sequence, and thus represents an excellent complementary resource enhancing the utility of the python genome sequence.
